From the start of the 2026–2027 academic year, OpenAthens will become the solution for remote access to electronic resources, replacing the ‘library’ VPN.

OpenAthens does not replace the University's VPN, which provides access to resources that are normally only accessible from within the University's network.

OpenAthens is a simple authentication system that allows University members to access subscribed electronic resources remotely, without any special configuration.

In most cases, you only need to sign in once with your ULiège username and password to access all the resources you are entitled to use. This provides simple, secure and seamless access across different platforms.

How do I use it?

A. If you are using the ULiège Library catalogue (recommanded method) :

  1. Search for the resource you need and click on the access link.
  2. If you are not already signed in, OpenAthens will redirect you to the login page.
  3. Sign in. You will then be automatically redirected to the resource you requested.

B. If you go directly to a publisher's website :

  1. Look for a button such as "Institutional Login" or "Access through your institution".
  2. Search for the University of Liège in the list provided. The name may vary (Liège University, ULiège, etc.).
  3. Sign in. You will then have access to the content subscribed to by ULiège.

Reference management software

Tools such as Zotero and Mendeley integrate with OpenAthens to provide access to full-text documents.

  • Some extensions, such as Zotero Connector, automatically detect OpenAthens and offer to save the proxy settings. Accept this authorisation.
  • If OpenAthens is not detected automatically, select the institutional access option and sign in with your ULiège credentials. You will then be able to access documents available through ULiège.

Troubleshooting access problems

  • Check that you are signed in and that your institutional session is still active.
  • Clear your recent browsing history and cookies, or try using another browser.
  • Please note that some resources cannot be accessed directly from the publisher's website. In these cases, you need to authenticate through ULiège via the ULiège Library catalogue.
