Missions

Learn about ULiège Library’s role in research, teaching, and open science.

The Rector’s Office defines the broad strategic directions for ULiège Library in consultation with the administration. ULiège Library is responsible for developing, managing, and promoting the institution’s documentary heritage and contributes to the institution’s reputation by providing services and carrying out the following missions, among others:

• to maintain, manage and develop relevant documentary resources to support the research and teaching activities of the University of Liège;
• to conserve, preserve and promote the University of Liège’s documentary collections – whether historical, artistic or scientific in nature – including, in particular, its heritage collections;
• to ensure that documentary resources are made available to members of the University of Liège’s academic community;
• to contribute to the development of critical thinking and information literacy skills within the university community through various activities (courses, training seminars, etc.), support tools (including IT tools) and services;
• to provide and manage learning and workspaces for the university community (notably the Learning Centre);
• to contribute to the dissemination of the scientific output of researchers at the University of Liège and to support the development of responsible Open Science, driven by the scientific community and aligned with sustainable and ethical approaches, particularly in the areas of Open Access, open digital publishing and Open Data;
• to ensure the University of Liège’s standing and influence within Belgian and international organisations and networks in the fields of librarianship and information science;
• to support and promote research activities – in the broadest sense – relating to the field of libraries and information sciences;
• in accordance with institutional policy, to organise access by third parties to the workspaces, resources and services of ULiège Library.
